Risks to consider when getting a loan
In today’s challenging economic environment, access to short-term funding may be needed to keep a business or household afloat. However, it can be difficult to find a lender you trust, especially online.
Use common sense and beware of scams
Please see our article on avoiding disreputable moneylenders for some general advice about online loans and details of types of scams to avoid.
Avoid pawn and drive loans
We strongly advise against “pawn and drive” loans in South Africa. We explain why in our article, Warning: The Risks of Pawn and Drive Your Car Schemes in South Africa.
Protect your privacy
Even banks – traditionally considered the safest of all lenders – share customers’ information with both credit bureaus and the government.
If you take a bank loan, for example, it can affect your credit rating. (It can also be very difficult to get a bank loan if you have a credit rating that’s fair or lower).
Other unscrupulous lenders (online or off) could share your personal information with any number of third parties, even putting you at risk of identity theft.
